Vintage Road Racing Banquet

Flattered and excited at my invitation to speak at the annual VRRA (Vintage Road Racing Association) banquet 11 November in Cobourg, Ontario. I’ve been asked to make a small presentation on my racing experiences in Europe.

Like most racers, I h
ave many stories to share. Yes, and I have a dream to ride a classic motorcycle on the track one day—there may be some opportunities and that thanks to an intro Michelle Duff provided me.

Weather or Not We Ride

Rain, cold and no ride.
Getting difficult now to find a chance to enjoy the Ducati 749—already becoming known as ‘Antonio Lapo” to friends. Darn. Had a ride planned with friend Don and Bob. We were going to visit the Scarborough bluffs (no I’ve never seen ‘em)—and just enjoy some seasonal riding. Sadly, weather not cooperating. And no, I don’t enjoy shivering and the rain—honestly who does? Sure, when travelling through the French Alps, and Tuscany in Italy for a few weeks, that’s different. Its part of the long term adventure.
Looking for a better day soon. If not will take the 749 to Ducati Toronto for winter keep—sniff sniff.

Who's The Man Behind You

What male got you into this motorcycling activity”?
This question asked to me, oddly, twice over the past month by two different people. Funny assumption--you agree? The stereo type goes on—how is it possible a female could be riding and racing motorbikes without some fellow taking credit? I appreciate the input I get from people I encounter and enjoy their views. Can’t fault them as I don’t expect everyone to understand the riding community. I realize if you have no interest in it, you can only go by what you see in media/movies etc. The feedback constantly reinforces my goals and causes me to ponder—head scratching as I refer it to when mulling questions over.

Well, I suppose in most cases its true, yet in mine it couldn’t be farther from reality. Yes I started out of my own initiative. No my father didn’t introduce me he never rode, there are no riders in my family, none of my friends had bikes, no boyfriend, no husband, no—NO. Just me. My interest, my curiosity, my decision—same with “my” racing.

Why is it still an odd happening for a female to be interested and involved in motorcycles independent of male support? Admittedly, statistics show it’s true, most females riding got into it because of a male in their lives—it’s a male dominated activity. I suppose as females we’re also guilty of the reverse (??) Lets take cooking, usually an activity associated to the female gender. We all know men who cook and enjoy it. Yet, don’t know any female who would assume he does it because some female got him into it—oh I know what your saying, mom cooked the meals when growing up---oie, can’t win!

Last MotoGP 2006

Amazing just doesnt say it when it comes to Valentino Rossi (I've got a pic of he and I when he raced in Assen)! He put himself in the lead again for the MotoGP by winning today in Portugal! A crash knocked Nicky Hayden out of the championship lead! I gotta tell you, being on the North American side of the world now I find it so incredibly difficult to catch the MotoGP on TV--I never seem to be able to find the TV channel so I miss seeing it--watching via internet (thank goodness).

So with Rossi but 8 points in the lead, the last race is going to be fantastic--I’m sure Hayden will pull out all stops in order to get the title--so many factors influence the results--makes for exciting racing!
I’m going to call one of the only friends I know avidly watching the MotoGP here in my area--Michelle Duff and ask her again what channel I need. Funny thing, there is a lesser excitement knowing that I'm going to view the MotoGP 6 hours (on average) later than the rest of the European motorsport world has.
I miss my LIVE Eurosport broadcasts (in Dutch with my friend Frankie Weeink reporting) and the BBC networks as well...sigh.

Fall Is Approaching

The weather here in Toronto has been sunny but cold. Even though I’ve tried to muster up the courage, to ride in this cold-er weather, I didn’t succeed. I’ve thought about the 749 each moment the sun shone—yet the thought of wind-chill is one that seems to overpower any other desire. Yes I do hate the cold. No worries—weather says will be 17 this Wednesday… so maybe I’ll have another chance before the real winter.
Never did make it to last Thursday night Sport bike rendezvous—yet there is a whole summer ahead!

Marriage Proposal

Took the Ducati 749 out for a ride and got a marriage proposal! Toronto on a Saturday particularly on this Canadian Thanksgiving weekend was a tough city to get out of and away from traffic. I headed up north of the city aiming for Lake Simcoe...didn’t make it. Traffic jams everywhere! No worries got some good riding in and became more familiar to the 749 and received a proposal of marriage! A fellow on a Suzuki GSX sport bike zipped up beside me at a stoplight...lifted his lid and yelled "can I ask you a question"...lifted my visor and said "sure"...he said "can I marry you? I’ve never seen a beautiful woman riding a Ducati before!" Think it was the beauty [he meant] in my red leather suit blending so nicely on the gorgeous classic red machine. Nonetheless, I was touched by his enthusiasm and it certainly made me laugh! There does seem to be a shortage of female-sport bikers ...seems there are many females on cruisers here in . Nothing wrong with that, yet for me personally I've always enjoyed more of the sport capabilities of riding. This fellow named "Michael" then invited me to stop by a certain sport-bike hang out in downtown Toronto on Thursday evenings. Weather permitting, think I'll go. The rest of the ride (total 5 hours) was exciting...even had a few rallies on the 4 lane express-way with some unknown sport bikers. Yes the 749 goes and I'm amazed at the ease of handling and steering just lovely in the corners. Hope I get the chance for more rides before the snow flakes begin to fall.
I've decided to name him "Antonio Lapo".

PICKED UP THE 749

Picked up the Ducati 749 from Ducati Toronto! Went for a small ride and well, it took some getting use to as does any new ride. What a great bike to handle--really had a blast riding it to my garage. Planning a longer ride on Saturday.
